It might be over 20 years old by now, but there's no fantasy film series better than Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Dedicated fans and anyone looking for a gift this holiday should check out the upcoming special-edition gift set at Amazon before it sells out. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: One Ring Gift Box 4K Blu-ray releases December 20 and is available to preorder for $157.30 at Amazon. It's a pricey set, but it's nearly identically priced with the recent reprint of the steelbook collection that sold out on launch day and never returned.

With Amazon's preorder price guarantee, locking in your order now ensures you'll get the best price until release. You won't be charged until Amazon ships your order. Since it releases so close to Christmas, it's especially important to order early if you want to buy this LOTR gift box as an actual gift. At the moment, Amazon is offering release-day delivery for Prime members.

What makes this release stand out is its packaging and a cool physical extra that might attract Nazguls to your home. The Blu-rays come packed inside of a book-like case that features a faux-leather finish, gold foil, map of Middle-earth, and embossing, as well as a One Ring replica with a little pouch from the Noble Collection. This little replica typically costs $49 on its own, so this is a nice and precious little bonus. Keep it secret, keep it safe!

As for the films, the extended editions include a ton of content that never made it into the theatrical editions. Additionally, there is new editing, additional special effects, and more music added to these cuts, and combined, the trilogy has around two hours of extra content. The 4K versions of the films are especially good when compared to the standard Blu-ray editions, as those high-definition versions of them added a strange green tint to the LOTR movies when they were first released in that format.

Outside of the fancy packaging and bonus collectibles, the upcoming One Ring Gift Box is the same as the normal 4K Blu-ray of the LOTR Trilogy, which you can get for $66.90 (was $90) at Amazon. You can also pair this collection with the prequel trilogy of Hobbit movies. Also available in a box set that includes both the theatrical and extended cuts, this 4K Blu-ray is currently $45 at Amazon, a 50% discount from its usual $90 price.

In case it does sell out, you can pick up The Lord of the Rings collection on 4K Blu-ray, only without the fancy packaging and One Ring. Normally $90, it's currently on sale for $66.90 at Amazon.

The One Ring Gift Box has fancy book-like packaging, but you aren't getting the actual Lord of the Rings novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. Thankfully, there's no shortage of fancy collector's versions of LOTR, The Hobbit, and Tolkien's other books, including the Tolkien Illustrated Editions shown above. These editions feature drawings and paintings Tolkien created while writing The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and his copious notes on Middle-earth that would be published posthumously as The Silmarillion, part one of The History of Middle-earth.

There's also the new Lord of the Rings Collector's Editions. These feature foil-stamped covers, stained edges, maps of Middle-earth inside the covers, and ribbon bookmarks. These editions released in September, while matching Hobbit and Silmarillion editions were published in August. Target has a timed exclusive on the box set containing the three volumes of LOTR. Until November 5, you can get The Lord of the Rings Collector's Edition Box Set for $84 at Target. The price is expected to increase to the $105 MSRP when the exclusivity window ends.

To help you navigate the many, many editions of J.R.R. Tolkien's books, we put together a custom Amazon hub filled with notable collector's editions and box sets of the author's beloved fantasy novels, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, as well as the complementary tomes that provide fascinating insight on Middle-earth.
