Five English countryside TV stars

The English countryside may appear pretty and charming, but it's brimming with toil and trouble — especially in the TV comedy-dramas and murder mysteries shot "out in the sticks". With the rise of streaming services — along with stalwart program-makers like the BBC — there are more shows than ever, yet some stand out, not just for their plots, casts and twists, but their locations, which often inspire a longing to visit.

This Britbox adaptation of Anthony Horowitz's fiendishly clever crime caper switches between London and Suffolk, with the real chocolate-box village of Kersey standing in for the fictional Saxby on Avon. Kersey is a 25-minute drive from Suffolk's county capital Ipswich via the winding country lanes that lead character Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) whizzes about in her red open-top MG sports car. Wandering Kersey's quaint main street, you can admire the colourful thatched and timber-beamed cottages and medieval stone church that typify rural Suffolk. Stop for refreshments at the 13th-century Bell Inn, which doubles as the Queen's Arms in the show. Horowitz's follow-up novel, Moonflower Murders, is also set in Suffolk, and filming for that is due to begin later this year.
